The calm, pleasant maltese terrier-miniature poodle cross, owned by Kaiapoi’s Kim Flanagan, helps kids, aged 7 to 10, with their studying on the libraries each week.
Every baby has a 15-minute studying session with Hazel sitting quietly alongside on her cushion. Assistant librarian Donna McMillan is close by to assist with any queries from the kid.
After every studying session, the kid is allowed to provide Hazel a small meals deal with as a “thanks” for her assist.
“Hazel loves kids and they’re drawn to her,” Donna says.
“She simply sits there quietly as they learn and her calm, non-judgmental presence appears to provide the kids confidence to learn higher.” Hazel has accomplished a Good Canine Certificates (silver) with Leithfield canine coach Janice Kirk as a part of her coaching to turn into a studying canine.
The well-behaved little canine is a well-liked customer to the libraries and attracts loads of consideration from employees and library goers of all ages when she arrives for work for the classes.
The classes run throughout faculty phrases on Tuesdays, between 3.30pm and 4.30pm at Rangiora Library, and three.30pm to 4.30pm at Kaiapoi Library on Thursdays.
